The Write Start

I thought it would be a good idea to kick of this ezine with an article about the beginning.

What is the beginning of your writing?

At some point a switch flipped over in your head changing your from a mere reader to a potential writer. That spark brought you to this point. The point where you are exploring the writing process. Within that spark is an answer to the question, why do you want to write?

I do not expect you to have a pat answer. For me the answer is buried in a convoluted network of emotions and memories. Trying to untangle it give me the sense that I have a pretty messed up psyche.

Underlying my need to write is a need that I feel will only be met through writing. But I cannot fully express in words what that need is. Partly it is because I want to connect with people. Partly I just want to express myself. Partly I just love books. Partly I want to be admired (or envied).

In a sense my need to write is all of that and more. I do not even know where my desire to write started. My fascination with books started early and somehow moved beyond consumption to a dream of being part of production.

How did your writing start evolve?

Did you gradually develop a sense that you want to be a bookwriter like I did? Or did you read a life changing book that stirred a spark in you and you said, I want to do this? or were you disgusted and said, I can do better than this?

Whatever it was, something launched you onto a journey and you want to be a writer. If you can hold onto that and want that more than you want anything else you may have the hope of doing it.

You may never untangle the mess of your writing origins. But without it you won't be here. Trust that your desire is true. You are going to need that faith in the journey ahead.
